AzASLA 2013 Award Winners

The Arizona Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (AzASLA) hosted their annual Design Awards Gala at the Desert Botanical Garden on Saturday, May 4. Speaking at the event was Vice-Mayor of Phoenix, Bill Gates, and renowned landscape architect Jerry Van Eyck, founding principal of the New York based design firm !melk. The Gala brought together professional and student landscape architects to celebrate exceptional projects from the public space, urban planning, private, and educational sectors.

Winning projects received Awards of Excellence or Honor and were judged by landscape architects based upon design and planning quality and execution, response to site context, environmental sensitivity and sustainability, and value to the public, the client, and other designers. Additionally, special awards were given in the categories of Educator of the Year, Firm of the Year, Alliance of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Landscape Architect of the Year. Winning projects were profiled in the 2013 AzASLA Mesquite Journal.

Call for Entries: AzASLA Advocacy Committee

The Arizona ASLA Advocacy Committee will be hosting a rotating exhibit throughout the State of Arizona from July, 2013 to March, 2014 in preparation for a collaborative alliance legislative brunch at the Capitol in Spring of 2014. The exhibit will include 20 boards showcasing firms, organizations, and/or individuals and their work related to public works projects, specifically those highlighting:

• Innovative Water and Stormwater Solutions
• Sustainable Design and Energy Conservation
• Land Conservation and Historic Preservation
• Green Infrastructure / Complete Streets
• Safe Routes to School
• Livable Communities
• Park Revitalization
• Transportation

Proposed Amendments to Chapter Bylaws

Greetings AzASLA members:
The following amendments to the Chapter Bylaws have been proposed and will be voted on by the Executive Committee at the May 21st meeting.

They are in sections:
• 806: Presidential term
• 821: term of Director-at-large
• 1106: when we went from fiscal to calendar budget years, this section was not amended

Comments and/or attendance at the meeting are welcomed and the items above will be discussed prior to the vote.

Happy Landscape Architecture Month

Landscape architects will join across the country during the month of April to educate the public as to how their profession promotes Healthy Living Through Design. They’ll hold public events showcasing just what can be done through hands-on work with the public, speaking engagements, and design charrettes.

ASLA Advocacy

Arizona Chapter Members: Please take the time to use the Advocacy Network to contact our state senators about supporting S. 338, The Land and Water Conservation Authorization and Funding Act of 2013, that aims to fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) The program provides matching grants to state and local governments for the acquisition and development of public outdoor recreation areas and facilities. We as practitioners are often on the forefront lines, designing and planning projects that would be covered under this fund. This act also is at no additional cost to taxpayers.

ADOT's Five-Year Construction Program Open for Comment

It is the perfect storm that's been brewing for the last few years as the effects of the economic downturn hit us all. The Arizona Department of Transportation has been forecasting dramatic funding challenges since 2009 that will affect projects across our state. Those economic predictions have now become a reality as ADOT begins to map out its next Five-Year Transportation Facilities Construction Program.

The Five-Year Program is updated each year and serves as a blueprint that details where, when and how regional, state and federal funding will be spent for projects over the next five years to improve our state's transportation infrastructure. For the 2014-2018 Five-Year Program (which is still tentative right now), ADOT has determined that $350 million must be cut due to stagnant revenue from the gas and vehicle license taxes and from decreased federal funding.

As a result, the next Five-Year Program reflects a major focus on preserving our existing state highway system while moving some programmed projects forward. Other programmed projects in the Five-Year Program will need to be delayed to future years due to significantly less funding. Preserving our system means protecting our investment of $18.4 billion; this is the value of the state highway system through monies spent on expansion, modernization and preservation projects.

The Tentative Five-Year Program is online and available for public comment. There are three scenarios that are being considered for implementation, and all three scenarios are available for public comment.

The State Transportation Board will consider all public comments received by May 17. Public hearings will be conducted on March 8 in Phoenix, April 12 in Tucson and May 10 in Flagstaff to allow for additional community input. The State Transportation Board is expected to adopt the 2014-2018 Five-Year Program at its June 14 meeting in Pinetop-Lakeside.

RSVP Required, Tickets Limited – Tickets are $10/each, this is a discounted group rate. Spouses, children, co-workers are all welcome, the more the merrier. Admission for children under 2 years old, not utilizing a designated seat, is free.

AzASLA Awards Gala - Call for Entries

Our 2013 Call for Entries is now available to showcase your projects and give you the opportunity to exhibit your work to your peers and others in our industry. Below please find the entry form as well as the Submittal guidelines, instructions and a template that must be used.

All entries must be received no later than 4:00 PM, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2013

Late entries accepted by 4:00 PM, FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2013 (additional $50.00 will apply)

Awards will be recognized and presented at the 2013 Arizona ASLA Annual Dinner & Awards Gala on Saturday, May 4th, 2013 at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix.

Applicants with winning entries will be notified in advance.
